I have written about my love for the story of King Arthur in my previous career in publishing. As a kid, I was fascinated by the idea that an ordinary person such as young Arthur could do something extraordinary – like pulling a sword from a stone – if given the opportunity. This is a belief that I have carried with me for the majority of my 48 years and I believe it holds true for all of us.
Three years ago, I had resigned from my previous position with a bodybuilding organization, and had been recently left unemployed due to the closure of the publishing house I worked for. I was disillusioned at the direction of the sport and frustrated at not having a forum to voice my opinions on it. I was at a point similar to King Arthur, who upon losing Excalibur, saw his kingdom darken and wither. If you’re not following me, you should rent the movie ‘Excalibur.’ Trust me, it’s a winner!
It was then that I received a phone call from Scotland, the country of my ancestors. On the other end of the line was one of the most respected voices in the sport of natural bodybuilding, Vicky McCann. As Vicky and I talked, we both shared our thoughts on how the sport should and shouldn’t be, as well as how it needed an honest, uncensored voice to speak out against its current direction. It was refreshing to hear that I was not alone with my concerns and, after a quick phone call to my close friend Michael Lipowski, we agreed to meet in New York City to form the Drug Free Athletes Coalition, an organization for competitors by competitors that would emphasize passion over profit.
Guy Addison, Vicky, Mike and I – and the support of many like-minded loyal friends, promoters, athletes and supporters -have grown the DFAC through a labor of love, sweat, hard work, personal financial commitment and many miles traveled. Three years later, we are ready to take the next step – the DFAC is launching a magazine!
Shredded Beef is a magazine that I describe as bodybuilding without prejudice. I have always believed that everyone has a story to tell. Be it a champion or a novice or someone who may never step on stage, inspiration can be pulled from all corners of the fitness world. This issue is a taste of things to come. Ultimately, the average edition will be more than 90 pages of inspiring stories, contest coverage from around the World, cutting-edge nutrition and supplement research and training advice from expert sources. One of those sources, the aforementioned Mike Lipowski is the President of the International Association of Resistance Trainers. The IART provides continuing education credits for organizations such as the NSCA and ISSA, so you know the information in Mike’s articles will be valid and applicable. The same holds true for all of our contributors – Vicky McCann, Dr. Joe Klemczewski, Shawn Schumaker, George Greene and Andrew Chappell, to name but a few.
In addition to covering DFAC-affiliated events (including BNBF events throughout the United Kingdom), Shredded Beef will be working with Bodybuilding.com to help spread the word, as well as deliver products advertised in Shredded Beef at preferred prices.
I am an ordinary person who has been given an extraordinary opportunity. Since 1979, when I picked up my first muscle magazine and decided that I wanted be a bodybuilder, I have dreamed of living a life in the bodybuilding world. Had somebody told me 35 years ago that I would be still living that dream in 2014, I would not have believed them. But, given my experience, I think it is safe to say that every one of us can have that moment when the sword is pulled from the stone and a new chapter in their life begins. This is the first page of mine.
